iPhone 12: A new era begins for Apple smartphones

The phone marks the biggest change to Apple's smartphone line since the iPhone X in 2017 and could very quickly prove to be the biggest hit of Apple's design team in the last decade.

The iPhone 12 combines the design of the iPhone X and the legendary iPhone 4 model if we talk about the new design but it is not the only difference. The phone along with the updated design has 5G mobile technology, better screen and improved cameras.

The iPhone 12 costs $ 799 and stands between the $ 699 iPhone 12 mini and the $ 999 iPhone 12 Pro and the $ 1,099 iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The phone marks the biggest change to Apple's smartphone line since the iPhone X in 2017 and could very quickly prove to be the biggest hit of Apple's design team in the last decade.

It has the same full screen design that changed things for Apple in 2017 with the iPhone X but the aluminum sides give the feel of the 2010 iPhone 4 or the 2012 iPhone 5. The combination is a drastic change compared to the previous iPhone model 11.

Compared to the iPhone 11, the iPhone 12 has thinner screen frames but the latter has the same size of 6.1-inches and as a result is 4.2mm shorter, 1.3mm thinner and 32 grams lighter.

The flat side parts and the rear window with a less slippery coating make the iPhone 12 easier to hold and use with one hand.

The screen has been significantly improved by replacing that LCD with the new OLED technology that in the past was reserved only for the Pro model. This translates to higher gloss screen with more colors, clearer black color and higher pixel density.

It is probably one of the highest quality screens you can find on a smartphone and has a new cover that Apple calls the Ceramic Shield. According to the company the technology makes it four times more resistant to collisions.

The new iPhone has the same Lightining port and not a universal USB-C port but comes with Apple's new MagSafe wireless charging technology. The MagSafe system is a magnetic ring hidden in the back of the phone to which accessories are caught such as the $ 39 MagSafe Wireless charger even though you can use standard Qi chargers.

Excellent performance, high battery life

The iPhone 12 has the same A14 Bionic processor which had a great effect on the iPad Air and iPhone 12 Pro. It is an extremely powerful processor that knows no competition and can afford everything the iPhone requires including intense video games. It will do so for years to come.

Everything works fast however no major changes are noticed with last year's iPhone 11 or iPhone SE even though it is a big step forward.

iPhone 12 is the first line of Apple smartphones that have 5G mobile network. The performance is similar to that of Android smartphones which have the same 5G modem manufactured by Qualcomm. However the waves were weaker indoors compared to the OnePlus 9T or Galaxy Z Fold 2. Only models sold in the US have the mmWave variant of 5G technology while the rest of the world will have the under-6Ghz band of 5G.

Battery life is good. The phone survives for 40 hours on a single charge with the screen used for 6 hours during this period. The phone lives from 7am to 9pm the next day while using communication and chat apps like Safari, Gmail, OneNote, Google Maps, Spotify and Bluetooth.

It takes 25 minutes to charge 50% of the battery and over 90 minutes to fully charge with Apple's 20-watt USB-C chargers. Charging with MagSafe technology takes three hours.

iOS 14

iPhone 12 comes with iOS 14 which works on all iPhone models from the iPhone 6S of 2015 to the latest models.

Released in September, iOS 14 brought a change of appearance. The new additions are on-screen widgets and the App Library which were seen by critics as Apple's delivery versus Android. With the App Library you can delete an app directly from the screen or change its position. Function similar to Android.

New privacy tools have been added for location distribution, cameras and content copying. The Apple Translate app has arrived along with WhatsApp style announcements in iMessage.

The iPhone 12 has two 12-megapixel rear cameras and a 12-megapixel front-facing camera. The configuration is similar to the iPhone 11 but with improvements to the main camera in the sensor but also software.

The main camera has a fast f / 1.6 lens which allows 27% more light on the sensor while improving performance in low light environments.

Improvements have also been seen in the software. Apple Night Mode can be used with all cameras by enhancing photos taken with the super wide-angle sensor and selfie photos. The lack of a Telephoto zoom camera is a disappointment.

One of the areas where Apple dominates is video and with the iPhone 12 the quality has been further improved at low light levels. With Dolby Vision HDR in 4K you can create videos that look like movies.

The iPhone 12 starts at $ 799 for the 64GB model to $ 849 for the 128GB model and $ 949 for the 256GB model.

For comparison the iPhone 12 mini costs $ 699, the iPhone 12 Pro $ 999, the iPhone 12 Pro Max $ 1099, the iPhone SE $ 399.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 costs $ 899, the Google Pixel $ 5,599 and the OnePlus 8T $ 549.

The iPhone 12 marks a major turning point for Apple in the design of the iPhone that had remained unchanged for the past three years.

It is thinner, lighter and the 6.1-inch OLED screen is a big improvement. Battery life shines, performance is strong and includes 5G technology making it a phone of the future.

The phone costs $ 70 more than its predecessor and still has the base model at 64GB compared to 128GB which has become standard to competitors.

It is expensive but at least it is a new phone in many respects.
